Easy Cast Iron Apple Crisp

I love everything made in a cast iron skillet…period!  From chicken pasta to pizza to this Easy Cast Iron Apple Crisp,  everything tastes better in a cast iron skillet.   And everything serves better in a cast iron skillet.  I love setting the cast iron skillet on the table and eating right out of it!

And what’s really nice about this dessert is you can be enjoying dinner while your dessert is baking in the oven. It’s really perfect that way.

Ok, let’s talk more about this recipe.  It starts with apples.  I always use granny smith apples for pies and other apple desserts.  I used two apples for this crisp.  I squeezed a little lemon on the apples to keep them from turning while I did prepared the flour mixture and buttered the cast iron skillet.


It’s really important to get enough butter around the skillet to make sure it doesn’t stick. But the butter also provides more flavor to the apples while it’s cooking.

There are only six total ingredients to this apple crisp so it’s super easy to make. The flour is sifted together with sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Once that is sifted you will cut up the softened butter to create the topping. This turns out looking like cornmeal.

Add it to the apples and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the top browns to your liking. Let it cool and serve tableside. Add whipped cream or ice cream to finish it off.  Like I said…perfect!

East Cast Iron Apple Crisp

With only six ingredients, this East Cast Iron Apple Crisp is the perfect fall dessert!

  • 2 Granny Smith Apples sliced
  • 1 cup Flour sifted
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 3/4 cup Butter softened & divided


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Using about 1/4 cup of the butter, generously grease the bottom and sides of the cast iron skillet. 

  2. Cut up the apple slices and place on top of the greased cast iron skillet.

  3. In a mixing bowl, sift the flour, sugar, cinnamon an salt together.  Cut up the 1/2 cup of remaining butter using two knives into the flour mixture.  The flour mixture will stick to the butter to create a topping for the apples.   Sprinkle evening over the apples.

  4. Put in the oven for 40-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.  Cool before serving.
