Homemade Cherry Pie

Cherry Pie 12

We all have special traditions for the holidays!  Some involve spending time with friends and family — some involve football and some involve FOOD!  We all have one dish that reminds us of our family or childhood.

For my husband it’s Homemade Cherry Pie!  And lucky for him (and me) his mom has an award winning Homemade Cherry Pie recipe.  Dee, my mother-in-law is a fabulous cook and when she was younger this Cherry Pie recipe won countless awards.  So it has become a staple for a holiday celebration.

She recently showed me how to make it — and it’s really easy!

Cherry Pie 8

You will start this recipe with 1 1/2 cups of dark sweet cherries or 1 1/2 cans.  First drain the liquid out of the can. Then put back about 1 cup of liquid into a mixing bowl.

Cherry Pie 9

Add the almond extract, tapioca, red food coloring, salt and sugar. Mix together.

In the meantime, you will need to get your crust ready. You can make your own or use a frozen or pre-made crust. Follow instructions on how to place crust in pan and trim the edges.

If you are making your own, you will have dough left over to use for the lattice. If you are using a pre-made crust, get an extra crust and cut the extra dough into strips. You want to cut into 1/2 inch strips like this.

Cherry Pie 7

Pour the cherry mixture into the pie crust. You will then add slices of butter to the top. It will come to about 1 tablespoon of butter total.

Cherry Pie 4

To start the lattice, place a few strips longways first.

Then you will weave more strips to create the lattice.

It will look like this when you are done. Sprinkle a little sugar on top for added flavor. You will bake this at 350 degrees for about 1 hour and 30 minutes until the cherries have set.

Here is your beautiful Cherry Pie! Let it cool and serve with some ice cream or whipped cream. Enjoy!
