Lemon, Water & a Dirty Microwave!

I don’t know about you but I don’t think about cleaning my microwave until something starts growing inside. I’m kidding, of course, but I will say it’s not high on my priority list. But wow what a difference it makes when you do finally get around to cleaning it. I have wanted to try this cleaning trick since I first saw it on The Kitchn! I never knew that microwaving water and lemon would actually help clean the microwave — but it works. It really works. I’m a believer. And all you need is a lemon, water and a dirty microwave.

Here’s a look inside my microwave. Yuck — now I feel exposed but pretty typical right?

You will need a half cup of water and a lemon. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the lemon into the water.

Drop the two halves into the water when you are done squeezing!

Put the water and lemon into the microwave and heat on high for 3 minutes.

After the 3 minutes in the microwave it’s very important that you let it stand for another 5 minutes. Do not open the door until the 5 minutes has past. You need the steam from the water and lemon to spread over the microwave.

Open the microwave and use a dry towel to clean up the mess.

Ta Dah! Your microwave is clean! It’s a great experiment with incredible results. You could do this with just water too but the lemon gives it a nice smell. Try it! You will be amazed at how well it works.
