Java Shoppe Homemade BBQ Sauce
When I think about my dad and how much I miss him, I often think about how much he loved food. The summers were his favorite. He loved cooking on his grill — whether it was bbq chicken or corn on the cob, he used his grill for just about everything.
When I found out about this great Huston family recipe for bbq sauce, I had to try it and make my dad’s favorite bbq chicken. When my husband was growing up, his family owned a restaurant called the Java Shoppe — and one of those recipes was for this Java Shoppe Homemade BBQ Sauce. This sauce was used on just about everything from pulled pork to chicken. It was not only a Huston favorite but a restaurant classic. So I couldn’t wait to make it!
The recipe starts with ketchup! All good sauces begin with ketchup right?
Then you add the secret ingredients.
Mix together the ketchup, sugar, ground mustard, ground black pepper, Frank’s Red hot sauce and white vinegar (not white wine vinegar — just plain white vinegar). It’s important you mix this in a metal pan.
Once it’s mixed it will look like this. You will want to put this mixture in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. This will help bring together all of the flavors.
It’s important you store the bbq sauce in glass containers. This particular recipe makes up to 5 pints of sauce.
Enough for plenty of chicken.
Enjoy!
