Container Gardening!

Burnt Macaroni photos 1 328Since having my first child over 6 years ago, I have always wanted to grow a garden to teach my kids to respect and nurture food.  After moving to our new house, I finally decided to start a garden.  But finding the right spot in a new backyard wasn’t easy so I decided to start a few container gardens.

I broke it up into three categories.  Herbs, tomatoes and my favorite, peppers!  I wanted a good variety but nothing that would be too hard or overwhelming to take care of.  I had two goals, grow foods I could cook with that were natural and not full of pesticides.  And second, teach my kids how to appreciate where food comes from.

Our backyard gets some great afternoon sun — and it seems to be paying off.  At least the tomatoes and herbs are!  We have collected a few tomatoes that we used in a few pasta salads and the herbs come in handy for cooking.  But the peppers are not showing any signs of life.

The kids are enjoying it and it’s giving me something to do in our very empty backyard.  Even Mickey, our dog, is enjoying us spending more time with him outside.

What do you like to grow?  Any ideas for next season?  I would love to hear your gardening stories!

  1. Its such as you read my thoughts! You appear to understand so much about this, like you wrote the guide in it or something. I think that you just can do with a few p.c. to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, that is excellent blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.
