Do you spend your week thinking about what you are going to cook on Sunday? I have to admit I do! But I’m a food blogger and we sleep, breathe and eat food …. right? I have been thinking about these Homemade Belgian Waffles all week and it’s not even Sunday yet!
For this recipe, I really wanted my waffles to be thinner, almost like a funnel cake. This makes it easier for the powdered sugar to seep through the waffle but you can add more batter to the waffle maker and make it thicker.
This recipe starts with my trusted waffle iron! I sprayed it with non-stick spray and let it preheat.
Making Homemade Belgian Waffles is all about the process. It would be much easier to buy pre-made mix but the fun of this recipe is breaking down all of the ingredients and combining everything one by one.
I started by mixing together the sugar, flour and baking powder.
I separated my egg yolks and whites and mixed the yolks with milk, butter and vanilla extract. Again it’s all about the process and caring for each of these ingredients.
I then combined the flour mixture with the egg yolk mixture.
What sets a belgian waffle appart from others is the air that is make in the batter. And the air comes from the whites of the egg. Using a hand mixer, I beat the egg whites until peaks formed. Then I added it to the batter.
Once it’s combined, it goes on the waffle maker and cooks for about 2 minutes. What I love about a homemade waffle is that it’s not perfectly formed. It looks uneven but that’s ok!
Give the waffle a minute to cool before taking it out of the waffle iron. I made a few different versions, as you can see this one is much thicker.
A waffle wouldn’t be the same without some syrup. We have homemade syrup my husband got from his grandparents many, many years ago. We are a little spoiled and only pull this out for special occasions.
I added some cut up strawberries and powdered sugar for the finishing touches. It’s a wonderful Sunday brunch meal or even dinner during the week!
Homemade Belgian Waffles
- 2 cups Flour
- 3/4 cups Sugar
- 3 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder
- 2 Eggs whites & yolks separated
- 1 1/2 cups Milk
- 1 stick Butter melted
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Powdered Sugar
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar and baking powder
In another bowl, lightly beat the yolks of the egg then add the milk, melted butter and vanilla extract and combine
Stir the yolk mixture into the flour mixture
Using a hand mixer, beat the whites of the eggs in a separate bowl. You will beat this until you start to see peaks form
Fold the egg whites into the batter
Let the batter sit for 10 minutes and pour into heated waffle iron
Follow directions for your waffle maker, usually takes 2 minutes to cook
Add syrup, strawberries and powdered sugar on top
This recipe is perfect for Sunday brunch!
