A Thanksgiving Cheese Board

There is nothing better than a cheese board! The mixture of cheese, fruit, and vegetables plus the crunchiness of crackers and nuts — it gets me very excited. I actually stay up at night thinking about cheese board ideas. That is why I started A Cheese Board so I can create different types of cheese boards like A Thanksgiving Cheese Board.

What Makes a Great Cheese Board

Cheese boards are all about variety! The best cheese boards are made up of several types of cheeses (soft, firm, creamy and crumbly) plus foods that compliment cheese like fruits, vegetables, nuts, something salty, something sweet and of course crackers or bread to put the cheese on. My husband and I would eat cheese boards on Saturday night all the time when we first met. Now we make them with my kids for dinner, football games, movie watching nights — any occasion really!

A Thanksgiving Cheese Board

For this cheese board, there is definitely a Thanksgiving theme. I wanted to focus on cheeses and other foods that would represent this time of year in taste and in color.

Here’s what you need:

  • Le Fromager Triple Cream Brie
  • The Drunken Goat Cheese
  • Wensleydale with Cranberries Cheese
  • Black Grapes
  • Green Apples
  • Pomegranate
  • Figs
  • Olives
  • Dried Apricots
  • Tomatoes
  • Walnuts
  • Cashews
  • Almonds
  • French Bread
  • Black Pepper Water Crackers

The Cheese

Each of the three kinds of cheese I used was very different in flavor and texture. A lot of my other cheese boards focus on familiar cheeses, but this being a special occasion, I wanted to have special cheese. The Drunken Goat and Brie were cheeses I had used before and LOVED them. The cranberry cheese was new. It was more on the crumbly side but really creamy with the flare of cranberries, perfect for Thanksgiving.

Notes

  • I didn’t add meat to this cheese board (not to compete with the meat of the day) but you could add some salami or pepper sausage to compliment the cheeses.
  • It’s a good idea to contain messy foods. I used a small bowl to put the olives in just so the liquid wouldn’t run into my bread or cheese.
  • Color is also very important to me in a cheese board, so I did focus on the browns and oranges of the season.
  • I used the pomegranate for color and to add a little flavor to the Brie cheese. It’s the perfect topping.
  • If you are serving a soft cheese, remember to have a cheese knife or something to cut it with.

The best thing about a cheese board is that there are no bad ideas when it comes to what to put on it. Just stick with a good healthy variety and you will do great.
